Brody Week 10: Water's Versatility
The Future of Water
Water, one of the most abundant resources on our planet, is so incredibly important in our lives, and I feel it’s underappreciated.
We often overlook how water can be used in so many ways, and is essentially the foundation of us and the world we live in. When we need to drink something to stay hydrated, the best choice of beverage is water. When we shower, we shower with water. We use water to grow crops and even generate electricity. Even the majority of our bodies are made up of water (~60%). Essentially, my point is water is one of, if not the most, important resources that is vital to our survival and lifestyle.
When drinking water, we’re providing nutrients to our cells, getting rid of waste, and maintaining our body temperature. When we forget to drink water and become dehydrated, we lose these nutrients vital to our survival, with mild symptoms including extremely painful (yet harmless) cramps, dizziness, and feeling lethargic. This only scratches the surface of the power water holds in our lives.
Water is also essential in maintaining good personal hygiene. When we’re taking a shower, washing your face and your hands, using the restroom, water is vital.
We also use water for more leisurely activities, such as going to a waterpark, swimming in a pool, or simply running through sprinklers when we were younger. This demonstrates that water isn’t just a necessity for survival, but can also be used as a tool for entertainment and fun activities.
In a world with no water (hypothetically, we wouldn’t die of dehydration), we would face a plethora of challenges on a daily basis. Personal hygiene wouldn’t exist, waterparks and pools wouldn’t exist, plants would die out, and the standards for general cleanliness would decrease drastically. We would also lose a majority of our food resources since marine life wouldn’t exist due to the absence of oceans, lakes, and rivers. Even some land animals, such as frogs, salamanders, and other amphibians would go extinct due to their life cycle starting in the water.
All in all, water is vital to our daily routines and overall survival, holding an immense amount of power over us.
Hello Brody! I found the title of your blog really interesting and an interesting topic. I really liked how you expanded on the topic of power by writing about a natural resources power. I never thought that water could have so many impacts. On the surface, water does not seem to be one of the key resources keeping life on this planet. Yet, life cannot exist without water. Life beyond earth can exist without many factors but one key ingredient to starting life is water. Where there is no water there is no life. I also found it interesting to read about the many uses of water, such as growing crops or even generating power. The world runs on water, and it’s running out. As a species water is one of the many resources that have been abused. Many places on earth cannot afford clean water or any water at all. I feel that if more people were educated about how precious water is, less corporations would feel justified to monopolize the resource for personal gain. I really enjoyed your blog and hope to read for you more in the future!
ReplyDeleteHello, Brody! I found your blog this week extremely interesting because it delves into a topic that I often overlook and take for granted: water. It reminded me of the privilege I have to be able to access this necessity without having to think twice about it because there are so many people out there who cannot do the same. With this in mind, your informational writing about the science behind water when it comes to somatic health, as well as all the other ways in which we utilize this essential resource, was detailed in all the right ways. The symptoms that come with not drinking enough water are those that I do not often think to solve through simply drinking more, so it was a refresher in that sense. The “leisurely activities” for which we use water are often things I do not think too deeply about, so it served as a reminder that water is present in all aspects of life. I thoroughly enjoyed your Week Ten Blog, and cannot wait to see how you continue to explore the theme of “power” for our next two writings!
ReplyDeleteHello Brody! Your blog immediately stood out to me due to the unique choice of topic that you explored this week. I have overlooked the importance of water in my daily life since I have always had access to it. I have never had to live without this basic necessity, making it seem like a right, not a privilege to have access to clean, running water at all times. Water is essential to so many processes such as agriculture, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and having fun! The entire world relies on water, yet we have overused and abused this resource. Water conservation has gained traction in the last few decades and as you mentioned, water is essential to our survival as an individual, species, and planet. I enjoyed reading your second blog post about power and look forward to reading more of your work in the future!
